Azithromycin for Pets

If your dog or cat has a bacterial infection, your pet's veterinarian may prescribe Azithromycin, an antibiotic that is effective against a range of bacteria that cause infections in the throat, lungs, ears, and skin.

  • Treats bacterial infections of the upper respiratory system, skin, ears and more
  • For dogs and cats
  • Available in a range of dosages and formulations

Dogs and cats can get common upper respiratory bacterial infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, as well as bacterial infections of the skin and ears. If your pet is suffering from one of these infections, your pet's veterinarian may prescribe Azithromycin. This powerful prescription medication stops the spread of the infection and kills bacteria by preventing the bacteria from producing proteins, which is necessary for growth. For your convenience, we compound Azithromycin into different dosage levels and two, easy dosing formulations -- flavored oral suspensions and tablets

What you should know about Azithromycin:

  • Talk to your pet's veterinarian before using this product.
  • Follow dosing directions exactly - don’t give your pet more medication than directed and don’t skip doses.
  • Read the label carefully for information about storage, possible side effects, and drug interactions.

For additional information about Azithromycin click the “More Information” and “Package Insert” tabs above.

Resistance is a major concern when giving antibiotics. Resistance occurs when bacteria survive and mutate and are then able to survive even after antibiotics are given. To help avoid any resistance, it is important to give antibiotics as they are prescribed for as long as they are prescribed even if your pet is looking and feeling better.

Azithromycin is a prescription antibiotic that is used in the treatment of certain bacterial infections. We cannot speculate on any diagnosis and subsequent treatment recommendations for the treatment of your pet. An evaluation from your veterinarian will be necessary to ensure a positive outcome. Talk to your veterinarian regarding your pet’s condition, and follow their specific guidelines for treatment.

  • Q:

Could you advise me if this drug can be given to a pregnant cat?
Asked on 2/15/2015 by LizBengals from UK

    1 answer

    • A:

The safety of azithromycin during pregnancy in cats has not been fully established. Your veterinarian will weigh the potential risk to the unborn kittens versus the presumed benefit when treating with azithromycin. In humans, the FDA defines azithromycin as a category B drug in pregnancy. A pregnancy category B in humans means that studies conducted in animals have not yet demonstrated a risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate studies in pregnant women; or studies conducted in animals have shown an adverse effects but studies demonstrated in humans have not yet shown a risk to the fetus. Follow the guidance of your veterinarian when considering the use of azithromycin in your cat.

  • Q:

Is it ok to give a diabetic cat the cherry suspension of zithromax before his diabetes has been treated? I noticed that it has sucrose in it.
Asked on 8/14/2014 by melindamc56 from Pentwater, MI

    1 answer

    • A:

The azithromycin oral suspension contains sucrose that may affect your cat’s blood sugar levels depending on the dose given and your cat’s condition. A veterinarian would be able to diagnose and assess your cat’s diabetes as well as monitor your cat while he or she is on the azithromycin therapy.

  • Q:

Is it alright to give this medication to my dog along with clavamox?
    Asked on 10/22/2013 by reatha

    1 answer

    • A:

      Reatha,

Your veterinarian may choose to add azithromycin to Clavamox therapy depending on diagnosis and probable infecting bacteria.  There is no contraindication or probable drug interaction with combining these two medications.  Contact your veterinarian if severe side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting or worsening of the condition develop while on antibiotic therapy.

      Thank you,
